Are Cantonese and Mandarin different languages?

Spoken, they are not mutually intelligible at all. Written, they largely share a standard.

Cantonese and Mandarin are often called dialects of Chinese, but a Mandarin speaker cannot understand spoken Cantonese without learning it. By the usual test of mutual intelligibility they behave as separate languages.

Writing is where the shared identity lives. Formal written Chinese follows a standard based on Mandarin, and Cantonese speakers read it fluently while pronouncing it in Cantonese. Written Cantonese as actually spoken does exist, with its own characters, and looks noticeably different.

Tone is the sharpest divide. Mandarin has four tones plus a neutral one; Cantonese is usually analysed as having six. Cantonese also preserves final consonants that Mandarin lost, which is why classical poetry often rhymes in Cantonese but not Mandarin.

In practice

For written material aimed at Hong Kong or Guangdong, Traditional Chinese is usually the right target. For spoken content, they are genuinely separate jobs.

Method and limitations

The structural rows — writing system, family, word order, speaker numbers — are taken from each language's own entry in our language data. The assessment of mutual intelligibility is editorial: it reflects the general consensus, and intelligibility always varies by speaker, dialect and exposure.

The phrase comparison uses the same 116 seed phrases translated into every language we support, so the two columns are independent translations of identical English source text rather than one translated through the other. Those translations are machine generated; the sample skips any row where one side repeats an earlier row, since a collapsed translation shows nothing useful.
