Waray to Hiligaynon Translator

Hiligaynon, also known as Ilonggo, is primarily spoken in the Western Visayas and Soccsksargen regions of the Philippines, including the provinces of Iloilo, Negros Occidental, and parts of Mindanao. It is also spoken by communities in other parts of the Philippines and by overseas Filipino workers and immigrants.

Uses the Latin alphabet, consisting of 20 letters: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, Ñ, Ng, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z. The letters F, J, V, X, and Z are used mainly in loanwords and proper nouns.

Features a relatively simple phonetic inventory with 16 consonants and 3 vowels. Hiligaynon is not a tonal language but has a predictable stress pattern, usually on the penultimate (second to last) syllable.

Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) order predominates. Hiligaynon utilizes a number of affixes to denote grammatical relationships, and verbs are conjugated to indicate focus, aspect, and mood.

Includes a significant number of loanwords from Spanish due to the Philippines’ colonial history. There are also loanwords from English, especially in terms of technical and modern vocabulary.

Part of the Visayan branch of the Central Philippine languages, under the wider Malayo-Polynesian group within the Austronesian family.

Primarily uses the Latin script. Historically, before Spanish colonization, a form of the Baybayin script was used by early inhabitants of the region.

Transitioned from Baybayin to Latin script during Spanish colonial rule, with the Latin alphabet being adapted to better suit the phonetic requirements of Hiligaynon.

Approximately 10 million people speak Hiligaynon as their first language.
