Batak Toba is primarily spoken in North Sumatra, Indonesia, especially around Lake Toba in the Toba Samosir, Humbang Hasundutan, Samosir, and surrounding regencies. It is also spoken in urban centers like Medan and by diaspora communities across Indonesia.

Modern Batak Toba uses the Latin alphabet. Historically, it was written in a variant of the traditional Batak script (Surat Batak), specifically the Toba script.

Batak Toba has no tones. Stress typically falls on the penultimate syllable. It has a relatively simple consonant inventory and makes use of nasal assimilation. It is phonemically straightforward with consistent vowel-consonant syllables.

Uses a Verb-Subject-Object (VSO) or Subject-Verb-Object (SVO) word order depending on focus. It is an agglutinative language with a rich system of affixes to express grammatical relationships, especially in verbs. Focus system (actor focus vs. undergoer focus) is central to its grammar.

Includes significant Indonesian and Malay loanwords. Older borrowings from Sanskrit, Dutch, and Arabic also appear in religious and formal contexts.

Part of the Austronesian language family, under the Northern Batak subgroup within the Northwest Sumatra–Barrier Islands group of the Malayo-Polynesian branch.
